SAMBA has acquired pamphlets over many years from various sources – professionals in the medical field, members talking out of own experience, AMBA(Australian Multiple Birth Association), etc.  SAMBA is currently in the process of updating some of these pamphlets and making them available to members as they are updated at a nominal fee – this list will grow with every MM edition!

We urge all members who would like more information on certain topics to please make use of this service.  If you have any ideas on topics that should be covered, please let us know and if you have any information you feel are of interest to the other members, also share that with us!

"Twin Management" SAMBA workshop 1987
(Another useful guide for expecting parents.  The information in this pamphlet was put together by mothers of multiples during an earlier SAMBA workshop.  The tips ranging from pregnancy, arriving home, breast- and bottle feeding, shopping with multiples, sleeping, time management and equipment layout, have been updated recently taking today’s trends in mind.)

"Prematurity : A guide for parents" by Elmarie Liebenberg.
(Elmarie compiled this pamphlet with the input from medical staff at various hospitals in Pretoria.  This is another useful guide for expecting parents as it deals with a lot of issues surrounding the premature birth of multiples – a common tendency in multiple pregnancies! Issues such as causes for premature birth, the stay of the babies in the NNICU, dealing with your babies in the NNICU, feeding the multiples and the adjustment when at home, are dealt with.)

"Twins in School" (38 pages) by Dept of Psychology, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia.
(In this booklet from the Australian Multiple Birth Association topics surrounding twins in preschool and school are covered.  They investigate the importance of language development for twins, give suggestions on how to help twins with reading and debate whether twins should be kept together or separated in school.)

"Parenting Triplets" Booklet by AMBA
(Parents of triplets are often faced with family situations and decision-making different to those of singly born children.  AMBA provides some guidelines to parents expecting/having triplets and covers topics such as preparation, birth & hospitalization, bottle and breast feeding, care and needs of older children, parents needs and emotions, financing, toddlers to pre-schoolers, triplets at school and returning to the workforce.)

Confusion: Identical or Fraternal, compiled by Liesl Ross (SAMBA National Committee Member 2000 – 2006 and SAMBA Steering Committee Member 2007 – 2008)
(Many people, including some obstetricians and midwives, still believe that the presence of two placentas means that the twins are non-identical and the presence of a single placenta would indicate identical twins. This is not necessarily true!  Liesl investigates this matter further and clarifies the confusion some parents may have concerning their twins status!)

HELLP Syndrome, compiled by Liesl Ross (SAMBA National Committee Member 2000 - 2006 and SAMBA Steering Committee Member 2007 – 2008)
(Many women have high blood pressure and are diagnosed with pre-eclampsia before they get HELLP Syndrome (HS).  However, in some cases, HELLP symptoms are the first warning of pre-eclampsia and the condition is misdiagnosed as hepatitis, gall bladder disease, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.  Liesl researched this condition and covers issues such as: ‘Who gets HS?’; cause; symptoms; signs of HS; prevention; the effects of HS on Mom and Baby and the treatment for HS.)
